College UnMazed is a colorful, interactive, infographic-based workbook that is designed to foster conversation while building necessary college knowledge and higher-order thinking skills. Teaching Students Informed College Decision-Making
While 90% of first-time-in-college students state they will graduate college within four years, the reality is only 45% of them will. As practitioners working with high school students, our goal is to increase both access and persistence rates so more students become credentialed for today’s economy. Through our research utilizing the College Admissions Knowledge Evaluation (CAKE), a 75 fact-based survey related to college culture and policies, the college choice and application process, and financial aid, we found that graduating seniors, on average, only could answer 43% of the questions correctly, with first-generation students only scoring 38.6% correct v. 51% correct.
The College UnMazed workbook and curriculum, written by school counselors, researchers, and counselor educators, sought to not only solve the knowledge gap but also to help students develop informed decision-making so they are more successful in their postsecondary pursuits.
